What Is PFT?

Pulmonary function tests (PFTs) are a group of non-invasive breathing tests that measure how well the lungs work — including lung capacity, airflow speed, and the efficiency of oxygen transfer into the bloodstream. Testing is performed on-site by dedicated RT technician.

When PFTs Are Recommended

  • Evaluation of chronic cough or shortness of breath
  • Monitoring disease progression (asthma, COPD, ILD)
  • Measuring response to treatment
  • Assessing occupational or environmental exposure effects
  • Pre-operative surgical risk evaluation

Tests Included

  • Spirometry — Measures air capacity and the speed of exhalation; the primary test for asthma and COPD
  • Lung Volumes — Measures residual air remaining after a full exhalation
  • Diffusion Test (DLCO) — Measures how efficiently oxygen transfers from lungs to blood
  • 6-Minute Walk Test — Monitors oxygen saturation with a portable oximeter during a supervised walking test
  • Negative Inspiratory Force (NIF) — Measures respiratory muscle strength
