What Is a Home Sleep Test?

A home sleep test uses a small portable device worn on the wrist and chest during a normal night's sleep at home. It monitors breathing patterns, oxygen levels in the blood, and respiratory effort to detect pauses in breathing (apneas).

The device calculates an OSA severity score (Apnea-Hypopnea Index) based on the average number of breathing lapses per hour in bed. This result guides diagnosis and treatment decisions for obstructive sleep apnea.

Home sleep testing is ideal for patients with a high clinical suspicion of OSA without significant complicating medical conditions. For more complex evaluations, in-lab polysomnography may be recommended.
